Men’s Ice Hockey Falls to Utica in UCHC Action

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team (2-2-1, 1-1-1 UCHC) fell in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action at the Murray Athletic Center on Saturday night to conference rival Utica College (3-1-0, 3-1-0 UCHC), 7-1.

Utica outshot Elmira, 33-21, through the course of 60 minutes. The Pioneers used a lopsided 18-7 shot advantage in the opening 20 minutes to set the tone in tonight's league bout.

Elmira's Chance Gorman '24 scored the team's lone goal, one that was registered even-strength in the second period. It was the rookie's third goal of the season. Fellow freshmen Jared Smith '24 and Jordan Gonzalez '24 were credited with assists on the tally.

In net, Chris Janzen '21 got the start and made 15 saves in 25:22 of action. Ben Fleischman '21 came in for relief duty in the second period and amassed 11 stops in 34:32 between the pipes.

A penalty-laden first period paved the way for Utica to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Elmira was whistled for five penalties in the opening 20 minutes, all of which gifted Utica power-play chances. The Pioneers connected on three of those five chances.

Brett Everson and Dante Zapata netted power-play goals at 4:06 and 5:43, respectively. Zapata potted his second of the night, this time even-strength, at the 12:11 mark. Then, at 15:45, Conor Landrigan pushed the Pioneer lead to four goals with a power-play play tally.

Brendan Schultz made it a 5-0 lead for the Pioneers at 5:22 of the second period, but Elmira's Gorman netted his third goal of the season to trim the Utica lead back down to four goals, 5-1. However, that was as close as it would get for the Soaring Eagles, as Utica's Regen Cavanagh and Buster Larsson potted even-strength goals in the third period to seal a 7-1 victory.
