Women's Soccer Falls to Ithaca 5-1 on Opening Night

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Four unanswered goals by Ithaca in the first half dampened the season opener for the Elmira College women's soccer team in their season opener on Wednesday afternoon, as the Bombers gained the early advantage and never looked back in route to a 5-1 defeat for EC. Rachel Bortnick '25 supplied the lone goal for the Soaring Eagles, the first of her collegiate career.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
With both teams facing difficult elements in the season opener, Ithaca was able to find the back of the net early on in the 5th minute as Rachel Richards found Alex Epifani across the way to put the Bombers ahead 1-0.

The Bomber attack showed little resistance, as Cassidy Buchman '22 faced 24 shots in the opening frame, making nine saves on 13 shots on goal. Ithaca scored the game-winner in the 15th minute after Rebecca Jackson found Rachel Richards on a cross off the corner kick to take a 2-0 lead. The scoring finished as IC was able to score two goals between the 24th and 35th minutes, carrying a 4-0 lead into the break.

Ithaca held the advantage in corner kicks (5) as well as shots (24) in the first half.

13 minutes into the second half, Bortnick was able to get the Soaring Eagles on the board with her first collegiate goal. After stealing the ball from the Bombers, Bortnick chipped it over the Ithaca keeper to bring the score to 4-1.

The Bombers added the final goal of the game in the 80th minute off the foot of Hannah Leask. Freshman keeper Nevaeh Winston '25 saw action in her first collegiate game, recording her first save in the 85th minute of competition.
