Wise’s Two-Goal Effort Not Enough For Men’s Soccer Against Hartwick

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Gavin Wise '22 converted a pair of penalty kicks in the second half for the Elmira College men's soccer program as the Soaring Eagles dropped a 3-2 decision against Hartwick on Saturday at Campus Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
In a battle between two programs looking to secure a spot in the upcoming Empire 8 Conference Tournament, the Soaring Eagles and Hawks both played a physical matchup with a total of eight yellow cards being issued. Hartwick would strike first in the matchup with a goal in the 16th minute before doubling its lead with another marker in the 23rd minute to make it 2-0.

Elmira had a pair of looks offensively in the opening half as Matthew Rojas '22 put a shot on frame just 32 seconds into action as his opportunity would be denied by the Hawks. The Soaring Eagles would get another scoring look in the 39th minute as Wise had a shot marked for the top right corner turned away by Hartwick.

Following a takedown inside the box, Wise would get the Purple & Gold onto the scoreboard in the 57th minute of action. Wise converted on his first of two penalty kicks in the contest as his seventh goal of the season trimmed the deficit to 2-1. The Hawks would net the eventual game-winning goal in the 64th minute before Wise converted another penalty kick for Elmira in the 83rd minute.

The Soaring Eagles pressured offensively over the final seven minutes of the contest as Martin Harguindey '26 would put a shot on frame in the 84th minute that would be denied by the Hawks to preserve the 3-2 advantage. Both sides recorded seven shots on goal in the contest, while Hartwick held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Zachary Raffino '23 finished the contest with four saves in net for Elmira, while Wise paced the Soaring Eagles with three shots on goal in the match. Rassoul Camara '26 and Pietro Gallina '26 also registered a shot on goal in the contest for the Purple & Gold.
