Trio From Men’s Wrestling Records Six Combined Victories At Blue Jay Classic

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA. – The Elmira College men's wrestling program had three individuals each record a pair of victories on Saturday as the Soaring Eagles competed for a second consecutive year at the Blue Jay Classic hosted by Elizabethtown College.

Selvin Maldonado '25, Bryan Stafford '26, and Darius Green '24 each finished the tournament with a 2-2 mark and battled through the consolation bracket of the tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Maldonado would have a great start to the tournament as he won his opening bout via a 10-3 decision in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. In the quarterfinal round, Maldonado notched a 9-4 decision to propel himself to the 141-pound bracket semifinals. He would drop his bout in the semis via a 9-1 major decision and would drop to the consolation bracket. A 3-2 loss via decision in the consolation semifinals would end Maldonado's tournament.

Hollis Berry '25 advanced to the second-round wrestling at 165 pounds after receiving an opening-round bye. He would be pinned at the 1:19 mark of his first bout and moved straight to the consolation's third round following a bye. Berry battled in what would be his final bout of the tournament as he dropped a 4-2 decision.

Wrestling at 184 pounds, Stafford would suffer a 16-0 tech fall decision in his opening bout and moved to the third round of the consolation bracket. Stafford would gain some momentum following an early loss as he recorded a 9-8 decision to advance to the fourth round of the consolation bracket. A pin by Stafford at the 2:33 mark propelled him into the fifth round of a packed 184-pound bracket. His tournament would end in the fifth round via a pin at the 1:06 mark.

The 285-pound bracket would see Green drop his opening bout of the tournament in the second round via a 12-4 major decision. Following a bye that moved him into the consolation bracket third round, Green responded with a 12-0 victory via major decision. He would notch a pin in his next bout in the fourth round before having his tournament run cut short with a loss via an 8-1 decision in the consolation fifth round.
