Elmira Ends Weekend With a 3-1 Loss to NYU on Saturday Afternoon

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. – The Elmira College men's volleyball dropped the back end of its opening weekend in UVC play, falling to the Bobcats from NYU on Saturday afternoon, 3-1. 

Eric Jackson '23 finished the match with 15 kills to pace the Soaring Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Soaring Eagles got down early after suffering a 25-17 setback in the opening set. In the set, the Purple & Gold converted on eight of its 18 kill attempts for a hitting percentage of .278 compared to .450% for the Bobcats, who notched 13 kills. Despite 10 combined errors for the Bobcats compared to seven for Elmira, the Soaring Eagles matched its largest margin of defeat in the match. 

In the second, the Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 victory in the set. The Soaring Eagles hit just .050% in the set, with EC leading the way with four blocks but 12 errors in total. 

Elmira grabbed the third set over NYU in 25-20 fashion after outkilling the Bobcats 15-10. In addition, the Soaring Eagles hit .346% as a team in the set compared to .233 for NYU. With Elmira leading 17-16 in the set, Jackson went on to record five kills over the remainder of the set to inch the Soaring Eagles closer, trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth. 

In the fourth set, the Bobcats jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the set after the frame was tied at 5-5 on a pair of kills from Jackson. After the teams battled and shared points, NYU inched closer to a four-set victory as it increased its lead in the frame to 16-12. From there, the Bobcats used a 9-5 run to conclude the set, taking a 3-1 victory.

Elmira will take a week off before hitting the road and getting back to UVC play when traveling to Massachusetts to take on MIT. First serve is set for 7:00 PM on Friday, March 4th.
