Soaring Eagles Defend the MAC With 2-1 Victory Over Skidmore on Friday

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College Men's Ice Hockey team skated to a 2-1 victory in front of the home crowd on Friday evening. Elmira avenged its December 4 loss to Skidmore as Bailey Krawczyk '24 would be credited with the game-winner in the second period on a power-play opportunity. 

Nick Grinvalds '22 scored the equalizer for the Soaring Eagles at the 10:31 mark in the second period on an assist from Graham Denomme '23, while Chris Janzen '21 finished the contest with 27 saves on 28 opportunities.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first period remained scoreless as Janzen recorded nine saves in net for Elmira. Nearing the end of the period, Shawn Kennedy '24 was tabbed with a holding call which forced him to the penalty box with just 28 seconds remaining in the frame. After play concluded, Krawczyk was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, giving the Thoroughbreds a 5-3 opportunity to open the second period. 

It took Skidmore just 23 seconds into the period to score the games' opening goal, with Elmira eventually defending a 4-on-5 opportunity. Trailing 1-0, Grinvalds scored on an assist from Denomme at the 10:31 mark to tie the game at 1-1. 

From there, it was Krawczyk who scored the game-winner on assists from Daniel Dimon '24 and Nicholas Domitrovic '24 at the 12:56 mark in period two. 

The third period played hard and physical, with the teams combining for 17 shots on goal. Janzen recorded 11 saves in the period, while Skidmore goalkeeper Tate Brandon recorded six. 

Elmira outshot the Thoroughbreds 28 to 25 on the evening, with each team converting on 1-of-4 attempts while on the power-play.

The Soaring Eagles return home tomorrow afternoon for its final regular-season home game of the season when they take on the Spartans from Castleton University. Puck drop is set for 4:00 PM on Senior Day.
