Women's Basketball Falls Just Short to Utica on Saturday Afternoon

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team dropped its Saturday afternoon matchup against the Pioneers from Utica on Saturday, 67-65. The Soaring Eagles battled through five lead changes and seven ties, while executing the fast break in which they outscored the opposition 18-9.
 
Five Soaring Eagles reached double figures, as Nevaeh Winston '25 (12 points, 10 rebounds), Desiree Roy '25 (12 points, 14 rebounds), D'Asia Jones '25 (12 points), Alyssa Waters '22 (11 points, 5 assists), and Taylor Jung '25 (11 points) all reached the mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Soaring Eagles took the lead right away on a made jumper from Taylor Albrecht '22 before the Pioneers finished the half with a seven-point advantage, shooting 53.3% from the field. In the second, Elmira used a 23-11 run and a 55.6% percent shooting quarter to carry a five-point advantage into the break. In the frame, Roy scored six for Elmira while Jung converted on two of her three shots made from long distance.
 
In the opening half, Elmira shot 50.0% from the field compared to 43.3% for the Pioneers. Utica's first-half lead grew to as many as 11 points, while Elmira's biggest lead of five came at the end of the half.
 
In the third, the Soaring Eagles were able to send the contest to the final quarter of play with a six-point advantage, outscoring Utica 15-14.
 
In the fourth, Elmira was able to increase its lea dot as many as 10 points before the momentum shifted back to the Pioneers at the 3:47 mark, using an 12-1 run over the next two minutes, regaining the lead at 61-69. From there, the teams would exchange buckets before Winston finished off a three-point play to give Elmira the lead back at 62-61 with under a minute remaining.
 
In the final seconds of play, the Soaring Eagles would have the ball while facing a two point deficit, but came up just short on the final shot.
