Softball Opens Season at Marywood on Monday Afternoon

SCRANTON, PA. – The Elmira College Softball team opened its season on Monday afternoon against the Pacers of Marywood University, dropping both ends of its twin bill. Elmira was led by Alex Brockhuizen '22 on the day, who recorded two of the Soaring Eagles' five hits, while Amelia Martin '23, Madison Brown-Bloom '23, and MaryAnn Sobel '25 each recorded a hit.

KEY MOMENT:
The Pacers sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning in game one, scoring six runs on four hits, with two Soaring Eagle errors. 

In the first inning of game two, Ashdon Clark hit a three-run home run for the Pacers, who used a four-run first inning in Marywood's 8-0 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
In game one, the Pacers wasted little time sending runners across the plate, scoring eight runs on six hits in the first two innings of play against Elmira's starting pitcher Cortez. Trailing 8-0, the Soaring Eagles used a two-out rally to plate its first run of the early season. After A. Brockhuizen singled on the infield, Martin tripled to right-centerfield which brought home Brockhuizen. 

Cortez would go out to pitch the fourth inning, allowing four additional runs before Sobel came on in relief for the final 0.2 innings. Cortez finished the game allowing 12 runs (nine earned) on seven hits over 3.1 innings of work, walking three while striking out a pair. Sobel finished the game allowing a pair of hits, with no runs charged against her. 

In game two, the Pacers used a three-run home run in the opening inning and an RBI single to take a quick 4-0 lead against Sobel. After scoring a run in the bottom half of the second to take a 5-0 lead, the Pacers would surrender its first hit of the ball game after Kaitlyn Belmont '24 doubled to begin the third inning. Sobel would come out to pitch the bottom of the third, exiting after 2.2 innings pitched where she allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits, while walking two and striking out one. Cortez would come on in relief, finishing the contest with 1.1 innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on three hits while walking two and striking out one. 

STATS:
Belmont recorded the first hit of her collegiate career against the Pacers with a leadoff double in game two.

The Soaring Eagles return to the field tomorrow afternoon as they head to Buffalo to take on Medaille in another twin bill.
