Soaring Eagles Finish Season With Doubleheader Victory Over Keuka

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Elmira College softball team concluded the 2022 season with a doubleheader sweep against the Wolves from Keuka College. After taking game one 6-1 in which Jillian Cortez '23 and MaryAnn Sobel '25 allowed just three hits, the Soaring Eagles would go on to take game two 7-1. 

Kaitlyn Belmont '24 finished game two with four hits, while Madison Brown-Bloom '23 finished with three RBI. In game one, Felicity Brockhuizen '22 recorded three hits, while scoring two runs for the Soaring Eagles.

KEY MOMENT:
In game one, the Soaring Eagles scored five runs between the fifth and sixth innings and scored six unanswered runs on their way to the 6-1 win. In the 5th, Elmira used four extra base hits in the inning to score three runs as Madison Brown-Bloom '23 and Felicity Brockhuizen '22 connected on triples, while Amelia Martin '23 and Arian Wilcox '25 each hit doubles. 

Elmira wasted no time in game two, recording six hits over the first two innings of play. In the second Madison Brown-Bloom '23 would record a bases-clearing double to give the Soaring Eagles enough cushion to secure the victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Wolves got on the board first in game one after a two-hit first inning against Elmira starting pitcher MaryAnn Sobel '25. From there, Sobel would allow just one hit over the next three innings of work as she concluded her day with 4.0 innings in the circle, allowing three hits while walking four and striking out six. 

In the third, Elmira would tie the game after Alex Brockhuizen '22 singled up the middle to begin the frame. After stealing second base, Felicity Brockhuizen '22 would single back up the middle before a throwing error allowed for A. Brockhuizen to score and tie the game at 1-1. 

After a scoreless fourth, Elmira used four extra base hits in the 5th inning to score three runs as Madison Brown-Bloom '23 and Felicity Brockhuizen '22 connected on triples, while Amelia Martin '23 and Arian Wilcox '25 each hit doubles to grab EC its first lead of the game, 4-1. 

With Cortez relieving Sobel, the Soaring Eagles had three innings of no-hit ball from its pitcher, while scoring another pair of runs in the 6th inning. In the frame, Katie Distefano '24 singled up the middle to start the inning before hits from F. Brockhuizen and Wilcox loaded the bases. Elmira would go on to score a pair of runs after Kaitlyn Belmont '25 reached on a throwing error which scored two. 

Cortez closed the door in the seventh to record the three-inning save, the second of her career. 

In game two, Elmira would score the game's opening run in the top half of the first after Bella DeAmelia '24 recorded a two-out, bases-loaded walk to plate Belmont and put EC ahead 1-0. 

After MaryAnn Sobel pitched a clean first inning, the Soaring Eagles would be back at it again on the offensive side as they went on to score three runs on four hits while taking advantage of a Wolves error. In the inning, the Purple & Gold would get it going with two outs as Brown-Bloom cleared the bases on a double to put the visitors ahead 4-0. Each of Elmira's first four runs were scored with two outs. 

Barr would go on to relieve Sobel after 1.0 inning, posting zeros across the board. In the third, the Wolves would send a pair of runners across the plate after a pair of RBI hits. 

Leading 4-2, Elmira would two more in the 4th as Cortez brought in a run after reaching via the error. Cortez would end up crossing the plate later on after scoring on a wild pitch to put EC ahead 6-2. 

The offense would be capped for the season in the 5th after Martin singled home Arian Wilcox. Barr finished the game with 6.0 innings in the circle, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two and walking a pair.
