Soaring Eagles Cruise to 7-1 Victory Over UMass Boston in its Teddy Bear Toss Contest

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – The Elmira College men's ice hockey team would record the NEHC weekend sweep with a 7-1 victory over UMass Boston in its annual Teddy Bear Toss contest. After the score was knotted at 1-1 at the end of the first period, the Soaring Eagles would score five second period goals, two coming off the stick of Kerfall Toure '27.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • It wouldn't take long for the Soaring Eagle faithful to throw its Teddy Bears onto the ice as Nicholas Domitrovic '24 would extend his point streak to 12 games to begin the season with a goal just 48 seconds into regulation, with assists from Janis Vizbelis '24 and Shawn Kennedy '24. 
  • The goal would be the only for the next 14 minutes of play until UMass Boston was able to knot the score at 1-1, following a score from Adam Sadovski, assisted by Corey Clifton. 
  • With the score tied at the end of the first, the Beacons controlled the faceoff battle, 14-10. 
  • Out of the break, the Soaring Eagles would score five goals in the next frame, as Kerfalla Toure '26 (2), Jared Smith '24, Stephan MacDonald '27, and Tyler Schwindt '26 joined the scoring frenzy in the period. 
  • Following a Kennedy penalty with just over three seconds remaining in the first period, the Soaring Eagles would begin the period short-handed, but Toure would find the back of the net on a breakaway to put Elmira ahead 2-1, assisted by Domitrovic. 
  • At the 6:39 mark of the period, Smith would net his third goal of the season, following assists from Carter Wisely '25 and Ryan Reifler '24. 
  • Scoring would go quiet over the next six minutes before MacDonald scored the first goal of his career, with Kennedy there to retrieve the puck for his teammate. The goal would be assisted by Kenny Maxwell '27, his second of the season. 
  • From there, Toure would yet again find the back of the net just three minutes following the MacDonald goal, as Schwindt and defenseman Mitch Haight '24 assisted on the play. 
  • Soaring Eagle netminder Kyle Curtin '26 would be removed from net just 8:03 into the period, finishing his evening with 23 saves. Brody Haynes '26 would replace Curtin for the final 11:57 of the period, making four saves. 
  • The scoring would come to a close with 55 seconds remaining in the period, as the Soaring Eagles extended its lead to 6-1 following a goal from Schwindt, with assists from Toure and Cole Tucker '25. 
  • The Soaring Eagles would score a goal in the third period, even strength, as Chance Gorman '24 scored on assists from Reifler and Smith to finish the scoring as the Purple & Gold cruised to a 7-1 victory. 
  • Haynes would finish the contest with 17 saves, not allowing a goal.

The Soaring Eagles return to the ice on Saturday, December 9 against Brockport which is the start of a five-game road trip which spans until January 13. Puck drop against the Golden Eagles is set for 4:00 PM
