Soaring Eagles Drop Wednesday Doubleheader Against Cazenovia at the Holding Point

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – The Elmira College Softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader against the visiting Wildcats from Cazenovia College on Wednesday afternoon. After going to extra innings in game one, the Soaring Eagles would eventually fall 6-5 in the 8th inning, while game two was called following the fifth inning due to daylight and weather, as the Purple & Gold dropped the nightcap, 7-4. 

Katie Distefano '24 would pace the Elmira offense with three hits and a pair of RBI on the day, while Jill Cortez '23 would also add a trio of hits for the Soaring Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME ONE

  • Cazenovia scored three in the top of the first against Elmira starting pitcher Maryann Sobel '25, using three hits and a Soaring Eagle error to its advantage to take a 3-0 lead.
  • Elmira would respond in the bottom of the second with three runs of its own, as Distefano singled home Arian Wilcox '25 and Bella DeAmelia '24 reached while two runners scored following a costly two-out error from the Wildcats.
  • The Wildcats would take a 4-3 lead in the fifth following a throwing error from the Soaring Eagles.
  • Down to its final out in the seventh, the Soaring Eagles would get a big hit to tie the game from Madison Brown-Bloom '23, scoring Asia Curkendall '25 who walked to begin the inning and stole second base. 
  • In the 8th, the Wildcats would score a pair of runs compared to just one for the Soaring Eagles. Elmira scored its run on an RBI single from Distefano and would go down with the bases loaded in the inning. 
  • Sobel would go the distance, tossing 8.0 innings allowing six runs (four earned) on 11 hits, while striking out three. 
GAME TWO:
  • Offense would be quiet on both sides until the fourth inning as Cazenovia went for four runs against Elmira starting pitcher Madison Lodowski '26, powering for five hits. 
  • Elmira answered in the bottom half with a run of its own, as Hannah Flagg '24 singled home Arian Wilcox '25. 
  • In the fifth, each team would score three runs, with EC using RBI hits from Martin and Brown-Bloom, in addition to a wild pitch which scored Brown-Bloom. 
  • The game would be called after the fifth inning due to darkness. 
  • Lodowski would go 4.0 innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on seven hits, while walking four and striking out four. Cortez would come on in relief, going 1.0 inning, allowing three runs (all earned) on two hits, while walking a pair.
UP NEXT:
The Soaring Eagles will return to the field on Friday with a trip to SUNY Delhi. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM against the Broncos.
