Men’s Volleyball Uses Golden Performance To Down No. 12 Nazareth On Wednesday 3-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Just two weeks removed from dropping a five-set thriller at home, the Elmira College men's volleyball program went on the road and defeated No. 12 Nazareth College 3-1 in United Volleyball Conference action on Wednesday night inside Kidera Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Soaring Eagles would get a combined 39 kills on the night from the trio of Alberto Mauricio '25, Edwin Sosa '25, and Jordan Peiser '24 as Mauricio would lead all players with 17 kills in the match. Elmira would go on to hit .353 as a team in the opening set and delivered 16 kills en route to a 25-21 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
Attacking errors would plague the Purple & Gold in the second set as the Golden Flyers would rally to knot the score in the match 1-1 following a 25-14 victory. Elmira would be charged with 10 attacking errors in the set while Nazareth hit .348 as a team to go along with 10 kills and just a pair of attack errors.
 
The Purple & Gold looked for a rally of their own in the third set and would do just that after falling behind late in the set to the Golden Flyers. Elmira would rally to knot the score 20-20 after making a run before eventually securing a 25-23 victory to gain a 2-1 advantage in the match. EC recorded a match-high 18 kills as a team in the set while hitting .297 on 37 total attempts.
 
Nazareth would lead midway through the fourth set before the Soaring Eagles would come storming back to gain a one-point advantage at 21-20. Both teams would trade points with the score eventually tied 22-22 before the Soaring Eagles rallied for the next three points to secure the 25-22 victory in the set and take the match 3-1. A double block from Ryan Mattes '23 and Max Cohen '25 off an attack by the Golden Flyers would put the exclamation point on the second victory over a nationally ranked team this season for the Purple & Gold.
 
Cohen finished the night with 39 assists for Elmira, while Mauricio tallied four of the Soaring Eagles' six service aces on the night. Alex Vega '26 notched 13 digs in the contest for EC, while Mattes and Oscar Munoz Trinidad '23 each recorded a pair of block assists on the night.
  
UP NEXT:
The Soaring Eagles are back on the court this weekend for a pair of matches against No. 10 New Paltz and Kean University as both contests will be hosted by the Hawks at 1:00 and 3:00 P.M. on Saturday.
