Late Goals Prove Costly for Elmira in 3-1 Defeat vs. No. 13 Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Elmira men's ice hockey traveled to Norwich University on Friday evening, where they faced off against the Cadets in a battle of the No. 2 and 13 teams in the nation. After conceding a goal 5:28 minutes into the game, Elmira got one back thanks to Jordan Gonzalez '24, who found the back of the net halfway through the second period. However, the Soaring Eagles gave up two goals in the game's final three minutes to drop the contest 3-1.

JUST THE BASICS:
SCORE: No. 2 Elmira 1, No. 13 Norwich 3
LOCATION: Northfield, Vt. | Kreitzberg Arena

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Cadets struck first five and a half minutes into the game after dispossessing Elmira behind the goal. After a save by Kyle Curtin '26, Norwich buried the rebound, and Elmira found itself trailing early in the game.
  • The score remained unchanged for the rest of the period, and Elmira went into the first intermission down a goal. After looking for a way back into the game for the first ten minutes of the second period, the Soaring Eagles finally found one on the power play when a Gonzalez shot from distance tied the game at one. Jared Smith '24 and Chance Gorman '24 were credited with the assists.
  • The remainder of the period saw neither team find the go-ahead goal, and after 17 minutes into the game's final period, Norwich was able to put themselves ahead in the last three minutes. Another goal scored less than a minute later sealed the defeat for the Soaring Eagles.
  • Smith led Elmira skaters with five shots, while Janis Vizbelis '24 registered a team-best three shots on goal.
  • Curtin started the game between the pipes for Elmira and recorded 34 saves during the evening.
