HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Soaring Eagles got two straight kills from Gabriel Staron '27 for their first two points of the match. After a kill by Peiser and a couple of Sosa service aces, the Purple & Gold held a 5-3 lead early in the first set. The Cardinals scored five of the following seven points to give them an 8-7 lead before another Peiser kill and a St. John Fisher attacking error gave Elmira the lead. However, a 7-1 Cardinals run put them up 15-10. Despite the Soaring Eagles bringing the set to within two points at 20-18, St. John Fisher was able to hold on to its lead and take the opening set, 25-19. Peiser led EC in kills during the set with four.
  • Elmira once again got off to a solid start to open the second, holding a 10-6 advantage during the set. However, the Cardinals responded with a four-point unanswered run to tie the set. The Soaring Eagles kept a narrow lead, holding a 17-16 advantage until St. John Fisher scored six of seven points, putting it in front, 22-18. Elmira could not start a rally of their own and dropped the second set, 25-20. Sosa slammed a team-high five kills during the set, while Luke Jata '27 notched three.
  • The Soaring Eagles held a 14-13 lead in the middle of the third after five lead changes to begin the set. However, ten unanswered Cardinal points put the contest out of reach for Elmira, and despite three-straight points by the Soaring Eagles from kills by Jata and Peiser and a block by Peiser and Dylan Vargas '27, St. John Fisher closed out the set, winning 25-17 and beating Elmira in straight sets.
  • In addition to a team-high ten kills, Sosa paced the team in service aces with two.
  • Peiser and Vargas each posted a team-leading three blocks, with Max Cohen '25 tallying two of his own.
  • After posting a hitting percentage of .318 in the first set, the Soaring Eagles registered marks of .152 and .105 over the following two sets, giving them a .172 hitting percentage on the evening.
