Soaring Eagles Drop Doubleheader to RIT on Friday Afternoon

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Elmira College Softball team dropped both ends of its road doubleheader on Friday afternoon to the Rochester Institute of Technology. After falling behind 5-0 through the first five innings of game one, the Soaring Eagles would push for three in the 6th but would eventually fall short. In game two, Elmira would plate four in the seventh after surrendering three in the sixth in its 9-7 loss. 

For the afternoon, Asia Curkendall '25 would notch three hits and an RBI, while working a pair of walks, while Jocelyn Jean '27 would also record three hits. Brianna Ramstine '25 would round out the Soaring Eagle offense in game two with a pair of hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In game one, the Tigers would jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. After Majot worked around a pair of walks but posted a clean inning, RIT would put a pair of runners on before Maddy Cook tripped home a pair of runs against EC starting pitcher Sobel. A batter later, the Tigers would extend its lead by another run after Erin Ozminkowski brought home Cook on a groundout. 
  • After a scoreless second inning on both sides, the Tigers would plate another in the third after Lillian Rienstra singled home Elise Guth, who walked to lead off the inning. 
  • After working a clean fourth inning, Sobel's afternoon would come to a close as she finished allowing four runs on four hits, while walking one and striking out one. Kendall McAnelly '27 would come on in relief. 
  • After walking the first batter McAnelly would face and retiring the next two, Cook would single home Guth to extend RIT's lead to 5-0. 
  • Elmira would bounce back in the fifth, as following a Katie Distefano '24 walk to begin the inning, Jean would notch a pinch-hit single which brought home the Soaring Eagles' first run of the contest. From there, McAnelly would double, before a wild pitch brought home Jean, and a Riley Storrs '27 single brought home McAnelly to pull the Soaring Eagles within a pair, 5-3. 
  • In the bottom half, RIT would add another run before going on to take the game, 6-3. 
  • In game two, the Tigers would plate another first inning run against Elmira starting pitcher C. Wheat after Cook singled home Rienstra. 
  • From there, the Soaring Eagles would go on to take its first lead of the afternoon in the second. After Ramstine tripled to leadoff the inning, a walk from Distefano would put a pair on for EC. With one out, Hannah Flagg '24 singled through the left side, which brought home Ramstine before RBI singles from Jean and Curkendall put Elmira ahead 3-1. 
  • The Tigers would pull within one run after a Soaring Eagle error allowed Bailey Kehl to score and trim the Elmira lead to 3-2. 
  • After a scoreless third, RIT would plate seven runs over the next three innings to put themselves ahead 9-3. Wheat's afternoon would end after 4.1 innings, where she allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits, while walking four and striking out four. McAnelly would finish the final 1.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits, while walking one and striking out two. 
  • The Soaring Eagles would work some late magic, but would come up short after a four-run seventh inning. In the frame Ramstine singled home Jean who doubled earlier in the inning, while Distefano, Madison Brown-Bloom '24, and Bella DeAmelia '24 each brought home runs in Elmira's 9-7 loss.
