FREDONIA, N.Y.- The Elmira College men's basketball team traveled to Fredonia Tuesday night to take on the Blue Devils in a non-conference matchup at Dods Hall. The Soaring Eagles won in an overtime thriller, 101-97, behind a career-high performance from Kelton Brown.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Elmira's Kelton Brown opened the scoring on a three-pointer before some hot shooting by Fredonia propelled them to an 11-0 run. Three-pointers from Tyler Cardello and Amin Ba-Ahmad helped put the Soaring Eagles on a 15-3 run of their own, after which Elmira led Fredonia 18-16 with just over nine minutes to go in the half. Layups from Chris Woodard and Emmanuel Karkari-Mensah tied the contest at 24 with five minutes left in the half. Both sides continued to trade baskets until a strong finish at the rim by Woodard sent the Soaring Eagles into the locker room with a narrow 33-32 lead.
To open the second half, an Alec Mercer three-point shot sparked Elmira's offensive momentum, which was followed up by a deep three from Karkari-Mensah and an old-fashioned three-point play by Brown. Another three-pointer by Mercer and a couple of layups from Woodard put the Soaring Eagles up 49-45. The Blue Devils managed to hang around but an Elmira run–sparked by back-to-back threes from Karkari-Mensah and Jude Wilkins and back-to-back dunks from Brown–gave them an eleven-point lead. Back-and-forth action resulted in EC up 80-65 with just under five minutes remaining in the game. Fredonia surged for a late push in the final five, going on an 18-3 run to force overtime.
The Blue Devils hit the board first in overtime with a driving layup before Brown responded with two of his own to give the Soaring Eagles a two-point edge. The two sides traded points at the charity stripe until Brown's layup put EC back up by two with ninety seconds remaining. A pair of free throws from Cardello, extended their lead to four, and clutch free throw shooting over the final minute helped secure Elmira's second win of the season, 101-97.
