PLAY-BY-PLAY
Alec Mercer scored Elmira College's first field goal of the game with a shot from downtown, which was quickly followed up by a Tyler Cardello triple. The quality shooting continued for the Soaring Eagles with more three-pointers from JJ Babcock and Jude Wilkins, and EC led 17-11 early. A run by the Lions helped get them the lead back, and the two sides traded baskets until Penn State Brandywine took a 5-point lead with four minutes left in the half. A three-pointer from Emmanuel Karkari-Mensah and a Kelton Brown strong finish at the rim helped pull the Soaring Eagles within one to close out the half trailing 37-36.
Cardello's driving layup opened the scoring for the Soaring Eagles in the second half. A six-point run by the Lions pulled them ahead by 5 before Brown responded with a layup and three-pointer. EC managed to pull ahead by 2 on a bucket by Brown with just under ten minutes to go in the game–but the Lions continued to trade the lead with the Soaring Eagles as the clock trickled down. An Elmira run, highlighted by three-pointers from Wilkins and Emmanuel Karkari-Mensah, gave them an 8-point lead with under three minutes left. The Lions rallied back over the final two minutes to force overtime with both sides level at 73.
The Soaring Eagles opened the extra frame with a nine-point run, propelled by two three-pointers from Cardello. Strong team defense and free-throw shooting by EC prevented the Lions from clawing back, and Elmira pulled off a 90-84 victory.
