WILLIAMSPORT, P.A. - The Elmira College women's basketball team hit the road Wednesday night to take on the undefeated Wildcats of Penn College in a non-conference matchup. Mallory Welty's buzzer-beating three gave the Soaring Eagles an electric 52-51 win.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Elmira guard Lauren Miller put the Soaring Eagles on the board with a jumper from inside the arc. Penn was able to respond with a 6-0 run before Elmira tackled an 11-3 run of their own, courtesy of jumpers from Mallory Welty and Abby Belcher paired with back-to-back driving layups from Amarionah Dixon. After the first quarter, Elmira held a 13-9 lead over the Wildcats. Mia Welty joined in on the action with a two-point jump shot followed by a corner three to give the Soaring Eagles a one-point lead. After back-and-forth action, EC held a narrow one-point lead at the midway point.
The Wildcats were able to pull ahead by four to start the third quarter before a pair of Haley Mosch free throws got the Soaring Eagles rolling. EC trailed by one before Dixon went on her own 10-0 run, highlighted by an and-one finish and capped off with a deep three. A couple of Penn buckets pulled them within four to end the third quarter. The Wildcats refused to go away in the fourth, managing to tie the game on a three-pointer. Penn College kept pressing and took a one-point lead with under 30 seconds left to go in the contest. After a PC trip to the free-throw line, the Soaring Eagles got the ball back and were trailing by two. With 12.6 seconds to go and a chance to tie or win the game, the Wildcats tipped a pass out of bounds. With 1.7 seconds left on the clock and no timeouts, Dixon inbounded the ball to Mallory Welty. She launched a prayer from way downtown that rattled home to give Elmira College the win at the buzzer, 52-51.
