ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's basketball team hosted Alfred State College inside the Speidel Gymnasium for a non-conference matchup. The Soaring Eagles and Pioneers were tightly contested for the duration of the game until a strong fourth quarter saw EC net 22 points to secure the 69-54 victory.
"Good win going into Thanksgiving break. The girls played hard and made plays when we needed them to," Head Coach
Thad Phillips comments. "Every girl that played had an assist and you don't see that too often. It's pretty neat."
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Elmira opened play with two shots in the paint from
Aynsley Belcher and
Amarionah Dixon for an early 4-0 lead over the Pioneers. Alfred State quickly controlled the lead with an 8-0 run of their own. With six minutes remaining,
Mallory Welty came up clutch by draining a three to even the score at 8-8. A fastbreak opportunity saw
Mallory Welty with another shot from behind the three-point arc to give Elmira the 11-10 advantage. The Pioneers walked away from the first quarter leading, 17-14. Looking to cut the deficit, the Soaring Eagles saw three-point shots from
Haley Mosch and a pair of free throws from Dixon to capture the lead. Another eight-point run from the Soaring Eagles continued to add to their lead, sending them into the half with a 36-28 lead over the Pioneers.
The third quarter featured numerous fouls from both teams, forcing them to produce from the free throw line. Back-to-back layups from Dixon followed by a foul from the Pioneers saw Dixon record five straight points to largen the gap to 12 points. A 5-0 run from Alfred State saw them cut the Soaring Eagles lead to 47-42 entering the final quarter of play. An electric fourth quarter was opened with
Mallory Welty draining another three to increase Elmira's lead. Shots in the paint from Dixon and
Kelsey Stewart continued to tack on to the Soaring Eagles lead. Layups from
Sophia Ward, Belcher, and Ward ultimately sealed the Soaring Eagles victory, 69-54.
LEADERS
Dixon led the way with a double-double, recording 14 points and 13 rebounds along with four steals and four assists. Offensively,
Mallory Welty followed with 12 points while Mosch and Belcher recorded 11 points apiece. Mosch worked hard on defense, recording six rebounds while Belcher tallied five.
