Soaring Eagles Blank Spartans 9-0 to Close Regular Season on Saturday

RUTLAND, VT. – The Elmira College women's ice hockey team closed the regular season on Saturday with a 9-0 shutout victory on the road against the VTSU Castleton Spartans as the Soaring Eagles locked up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming New England Hockey Conference Tournament next Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The scoring would be opened by Mo McBride '27 as she put Elmira onto the scoreboard at the 9:32 mark of the first period. Alayna Toole '26 followed just 26 seconds later to push the Elmira lead to 2-0.
  • Elmira tallied consecutive power-play goals early in the second period as Gabby Dougherty '26 made it 3-0 before Iliana Smith '27 made it 4-0 at the 9:20 mark with the extra skater on the ice.
  • McBride added her second goal of the contest at the 9:44 mark of the frame with an even-strength tally at the 9:44 mark. Erika Goleniak '25 pushed the advantage for the Soaring Eagles to 6-0 in the final minute of the second period as Elmira goaltender Sara Sevcikova '28 recorded her first collegiate assist on the play.
  • Elmira added three more goals in the third period as Sophie Gregory '26 found the back of the net for a second consecutive game to make it 7-0 at the 4:33 mark. Toole notched a short-handed goal at the 9:18 mark to make it 8-0, while Sabrina Shvartsman '25 closed the scoring at the 11:23 mark to make it 9-0.
  • Sevcikova notched a career-high 27 saves to go along with her fifth shutout of the season for the Purple & Gold. McKenzie Schmidt '25 and Annie Audet '28 both finished with a pair of assists for the Soaring Eagles, while eight other EC skaters finished with one assist in the contest.
 
UP NEXT: The Soaring Eagles will host a quarterfinal matchup at the Murray Athletic Center on Saturday, February 22, at a time to be determined later. The Soaring Eagles are slated to host Castleton as the Spartans finished seventh in the standings.
