Soaring Eagles and Falcons Match Up in NCAA Quarterfinals on Saturday

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Following its 1-0 shutout victory against No. 6 Plattsburgh State in the First Round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Championship last Saturday, the Elmira College Soaring Eagles will face No. 1 Wisconsin-River Falls in the Quarterfinals on Saturday, March 22. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CT (4:00 p.m. ET).

The Soaring Eagles and Falcons will face off in a rematch of the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Championship national title game at Hunt Arena in River Falls, Wisconsin. The Semifinals, along with the national championship game, will be held the following weekend at Hunt Arena.

Elmira and River Falls will meet for the sixth time in the head-to-head series, as the two sides played for the first time during the 2003 season. Elmira won each of the first three meetings (2003, 2009, 2015), while the Falcons have won the last two contests. This will be the first meeting between the Soaring Eagles and the Falcons in the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, as the first four meetings were Semifinal contests, followed by last year's title game.

The Soaring Eagles advanced to the Quarterfinals after recording a 1-0 victory on the road against the Plattsburgh State Cardinals, with first-year goaltender Sara Sevcikova notching a career-best 40-save shutout for Elmira. The Purple & Gold successfully killed five power-play opportunities by the Cardinals in the game, along with recording a season-high 16 blocked shots. Elmira would get the lone tally of the contest from senior Erika Goleniak, who notched her team-leading 17th goal of the season and sixth power-play tally.

The Falcons had last weekend off after earning a bye into the Quarterfinals of this year's tournament. River Falls captured its sixth straight WIAC O'Brien Cup title and 10th overall in program history after defeating UW-Eau Claire 4-1 at Hunt Arena. River Falls netted three unanswered goals against the Blugolds after the game was tied 1-1 through 20 minutes. The Falcons had four different goal-scorers in the contest, while Madison Lavergne recorded a pair of assists for River Falls. Goaltender Jordan O'Kane finished with 22 saves on 23 shots, improving to 16-2-2 on the season for the Falcons.

Saturday's quarterfinal matchup will feature a pair of players who were recently named finalists for the 2024-25 Laura Hurd Award, honoring the AHCA Women's Ice Hockey DIII Player of the Year. Elmira's Erika Goleniak and River Falls' Bailey Olson were both part of the 13 finalists who will vie for this year's award, which will be announced on Thursday, March 27.
