Geneva, N.Y. – The Soaring Eagles women's hockey team hit the road to face William Smith for game one of their weekend series. Elmira netted the first goal of the game to ultimately lead them to a 3-1 victory against the Herons.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first period of play, the Soaring Eagles outshot the Herons 14 to six. Elmira put the William Smith goalkeeper to work early, seeing her record 14 saves in just the first period.
Amber Meluzio took the first shot on pipe three minutes into play, seeing
MK Boyle and
Alayna Toole follow with shots that went wide.
Piper Andrews and
Maura O'Keeffe took their shot on pipe, seeing Elmira with 13 shots in a five-minute span. At the end of the first period, both teams remained at a draw (0-0).
Anna Lugge wasted no time in the second period, netting Elmira's first goal courtesy of
Annie Audet and McBride for the 1-0 advantage. EC continued to put their best shots on the ice, recording ten shots compared to the Herons' twelve. Goalkeeper
Olivia Last was a force to be reckoned with as she gloved 12 during the second period. Strong defensive efforts held William Smith scoreless entering the final period of play, 1-0.
In the third quarter, an early penalty allowed William Smith to even the playing field on a power-play opportunity. Elmira quickly responded, seeing
Piper Andrews find the stick of O'Keeffe for the 2-1 advantage. Lugge joined in on the action at the twelve-minute mark, seeing Boyle and
Bri Conger pick up the assists. The Soaring Eagles continued to press on offense, seeing them close the game out and pick up a 3-1 victory.
