PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Soaring Eagles came out looking to make an early statement against the nationally ranked Statesmen. Elmira generated several opportunities in the opening period, including a breakaway chance for
Austin Jerzak near the midway point of the frame. Just two minutes later,
Brock MacDonald nearly broke the deadlock, ringing a shot off the post. Hobart applied plenty of pressure of its own, but Madiev stood tall between the pipes, turning aside all 21 shots he faced in the opening period. The two sides headed into the first intermission scoreless, with the Statesmen holding a 21-10 advantage in shots on goal.
Hobart broke through at the 4:51 mark of the second period, as Connor Elliott found the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The Statesmen doubled their lead just over two minutes later when Luke Calabria scored at the 7:02 mark. Elmira looked to respond and received a power-play opportunity midway through the period, but was unable to capitalize. The Statesmen added a third goal at the 14:45 mark, sending Hobart into the second intermission with a 3-0 advantage.
Elmira continued to battle in the third period and was rewarded at the 8:08 mark following a beautiful passing sequence.
Justin Pare and
Spencer Barrow combined to set up
Jack Treacy, who finished off the move to put the Soaring Eagles on the scoreboard and cut the deficit to 3-1. The Soaring Eagles continued to search for a way back into the contest, but Hobart restored its three-goal advantage at the 14:43 mark when Adam Mendelson found the back of the net. Elmira was unable to close the gap in the remaining minutes, as the Statesmen secured a 4-1 victory.
