Pine Valley, N.Y. - The Elmira College women's hockey team hosted the Golden Flyers of Nazareth University in a conference matchup on Saturday night. The Soaring Eagles battled hard but fell after Nazareth scored a late goal, 4-3.

The Soaring Eagles were able to strike first in the contest four minutes in, as
Mo McBride picked up a rebound and found the back of the net. The initial shot and primary assist went to
Abby Eselunas, and the secondary assist went to
Mandy McCarrick.
Sara Sevcikova made a couple good saves in net during the middle part of the first period for Elmira. The penalty kill was successful in killing of an EC penalty, holding the Golden Flyers to just one shot. The Soaring Eagles had an opportunity with two minutes remaining, getting three shots off in just ten seconds. The Nazareth goalie stood tall between the pipes, making all three saves during the stretch. Both teams had ten shots on goal in the first period and EC had a 1-0 lead at intermission.
EC put the pressure on Nazareth early in the second with shots by
Anna Lugge and McBride but were unable to beat the goalie. An Elmira penalty ended the scoring chance and gave the Golden Flyers some momentum. Nazareth tied the game with a power-play goal five minutes into the second. The Golden Flyers scored again a bit later, taking the lead 2-1 halfway through the contest. Elmira responded right away as Eselunas was able to beat the Nazareth netminder, taking a pass from Lugge and tying the game. EC scored again a minute later as Illiana Smith received a pass from
MK Boyle and
Bella Tomasso, beating the Nazareth goalie with her shot. The remaining seven minutes were defensive with both teams only having one shot on goal. Elmira had a 3-2 lead heading into the final period.
The EC power-play had chance to add to the advantage early in the third but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. An Elmira penalty killed the scoring momentum again and Nazareth was able to tie the game five minutes into the final period. Sevcikova made some nice saves throughout the third that was able to keep the contest tied as three as time was winding down. The Golden Flyers managed to score a late goal with 70 seconds left to take a 4-3 advantage. Elmira pulled the goalie, but were unable to get a shot off, the Golden Flyers claiming a close victory, 4-3.
