HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – The Elmira College softball team hosted the Lakers of Oswego State for the Soaring Eagles' home opener on Thursday afternoon. Oswego State took the first game by a score of 7-0, while a strong offensive start for the Soaring Eagles in the second game was halted by inclement weather.
GAME ONE: Lakers Take 7-0 Victory
After a hitless first inning for both teams, Oswego State opened the scoring on a sacrifice bunt to take a 1-0 lead. Kristen Cole recorded a base hit to get Elmira on the board, but the Soaring Eagles were unable to bring her home.
A strong third inning by the Lakers saw them tally five more runs, giving them a 6-0 advantage after three innings. Savannah Persun retired the first three Oswego batters in the fourth inning. After being hit by a pitch, Sophia Polzella advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Elmira was again unable to capitalize.
The Lakers added another run in the fifth to extend their lead to 7-0. Sophia Temple singled to center field, but the Soaring Eagles could not generate any offense, as Oswego State closed out the final two innings to secure the victory.
GAME TWO: Strong EC Start Spoiled by Weather
Oswego State opened the scoring in game two with two runs in the first inning. The Soaring Eagles responded quickly, as Teona Cruz delivered a single to center field to score Kendall Curreri. Kristen Cole reached third base while driving in two runs, and Rachel Lunger followed with a single to bring Cole home, giving Elmira a 4-2 lead after one inning. The Lakers added one more run before a weather delay halted play and disrupted Elmira's momentum. The game was ultimately abandoned due to thunderstorms in the area.
