Soaring Eagles Pick Up Empire 8 Victory Over Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Elmira College baseball team traveled to Alfred, NY for a conference matchup with the Saxons of Alfred University on Wednesday afternoon. The Soaring Eagles offence put up eight runs and grabbed the victory over Alfred University in this conference matchup 8-2.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
Kaden Bolt opened the contest with a walk for EC. He stole second a few pitches later and advanced to third on an error that happened when he was stealing second. Xander Canfield followed up with a walk of his own to put runners on the corners. Bolt came into score the game's first run on an error during a pickoff attempt. Canfield stole third base a bit later and came around to score on another error to give Elmira a 2-0 advantage. The Saxons responded with a run in the bottom of the second, cutting the Soaring Eagles advantage to 2-1. Bolt started the third by getting hit by a pitch and added a stolen base to his total a few pitches after. Canfield and Jordan Barthel continued the offensive momentum with walks that loaded the bases with Soaring Eagles. Brady Buttice was hit by a pitch, forcing Bolt into score, and putting Elmira in front 3-1. Connor Stone followed with a sac fly to center field, allowing Canfield to cross the plate with the fourth run of the game for EC. Bolt picked up an infield single and then notched his third stolen base of the contest in the fourth inning. EC loaded the bases when Canfield walked and Barthel got hit by a pitch but could not get any runs across in the inning. Darion Rodriguez worked his way through the third and fourth with limited traffic on the bases and no runs allowed. CJ Wheaton got momentum going in the fifth inning with a triple down the left field line. Sean Deaner sent a single back up the middle, bringing Wheaton around to score and pushing the Soaring Eagles advantage to 5-1. 
 
Rodriguez continued to work his way through innings, holding the Saxons to just one run through six innings of play. The Saxons threatened with a pair of base runners and two outs in the seventh inning. Rodriguez got the batter to fly out and escape the jam, holding the four-run advantage for EC. Bolt started the eighth inning by reaching on an error and advanced to third base on the error. Canfield singled through the left side to bring Bolt into score and put EC in front 6-1. Buttice lined a pitch out to right center for a triple, allowing Canfield to cross the plate and push the Elmira advantage to 7-1. Deaner continued momentum later with a single that brought Buttice around to score and push the Soaring Eagles in front 8-1. The Saxons added a run in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to six runs. The game would end at this point due to inclement weather, the Soaring Eagles claiming the victory 8-2. 
 
LEADERS
Offensively, Canfield led the way, going 2-2 at the plate, while scoring 3 runs and notching an RBI. He also added a pair of stolen bases to his total. Stone went 1-3 at the plate and picked up an RBI. Buttice went 1-4 at the dish with a triple, recording a run scored and tallying two RBIs. Rodriguez pitched seven innings, allowing one run while picking up 5 strikeouts. 
 
UP NEXT
The Soaring Eagles are back in action on Friday April 17th as they host the Wildcats of SUNY Polytechnic Institution for a conference matchup at the Holding Point Recreation Center. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
