Flag Football Clinches Playoff Berth with Win over Russell Sage

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College flag football team hosted the Gators of Russell Sage College in an Empire 8 contest Wednesday afternoon, where the Soaring Eagles clinched an Empire 8 playoff berth with a 42–20 victory.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Soaring Eagles defense started strong, forcing a quick three-and-out. EC scored the first points of the game when Hannah Smith connected with Kylie Hook for a 10-yard touchdown. Elmira extended its lead on a 3-yard rushing touchdown by Smith, and a successful two-point conversion made it 14–0 at the end of the first quarter.

In a defensive second quarter, neither team found the end zone, and the Soaring Eagles carried their 14–0 advantage into halftime.

The EC defense opened the second half with a key fourth-down stop, forcing a turnover on downs. The Soaring Eagles offense then found its rhythm, as Smith connected with Faith Ingber on a couple of receptions. On the next play, Smith found Hook again in the end zone and added two more on the point-after attempt to extend the lead to 22–0. After forcing a Sage punt, Smith connected with Hook for her third touchdown of the day, pushing the Soaring Eagles' lead to 28 after three quarters.

The Gators got on the board early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 28–8. Elmira responded immediately, as Ingber scored on a 29-yard touchdown reception from Smith, followed by a successful two-point conversion. Russell Sage continued its offensive momentum on the next drive with another passing touchdown. EC answered once again, marching down the field behind runs from Jenica Jones and a reception by Nyla Capen. Jones capped the drive with a rushing touchdown, making it 42–20.
