HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – The Elmira College softball team hosted SUNY Delhi for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Soaring Eagles split the two contests, winning the first game 4–0 before falling 3–1 in the second.
GAME ONE: Soaring Eagles Shut Broncos Out
Elmira struck first, as Teona Cruz's base hit scored Kendall Curreri. After a SUNY Delhi hit in the third, Savannah Persun retired the next three batters and carried that momentum through the rest of the game, not allowing another hit. In the bottom of the fifth, the Broncos walked a couple of Soaring Eagles before a single loaded the bases. Jocelyn Jean took advantage, doubling to right-center to drive in three runs and give EC a 4–0 lead. Elmira closed out the game behind Persun's strong performance to take game one of the afternoon.
GAME TWO: Elmira Can't Rally Late
The Broncos opened the scoring early, putting two runs on the board in the first inning to take the lead after one. Sophia Polzella got into scoring position in the second after singling and stealing second, but the Soaring Eagles were unable to drive her in. After a hitless third, EC found some offense in the fourth. Jean and Cruz both singled, and Kristen Cole walked to load the bases. Polzella's double to left field scored Jean, but the Soaring Eagles could not add any more runs. After two scoreless innings, the Broncos added an insurance run in the seventh. Cole's base hit sparked a potential rally, but the Soaring Eagles were unable to mount a late comeback.
LEADERS
Jocelyn Jean had 3 hits and 3 RBIs on the day, while Sophia Polzella added 2 hits and an RBI. Savannah Persun gave up just 3 hits and zero runs in a complete game.
