Soaring Eagles Fall Late Against Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Elmira College men's lacrosse team traveled to Alfred, NY for a matchup with the Pioneers of Alfred State College on Wednesday evening. The Soaring Eagles battled but fell late in a matchup against Alfred State, 13-12.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Pioneers struck first in the one, scoring the opening goal five minutes into the contest to take the advantage. Two minutes later, Corbin Melie sent a shot into the back of the net while the Soaring Eagles were a man down to even up the score. Three minutes later, it was Melie beating the keeper again, this one putting Elmira in front 2-1 and came just 30 seconds after Melie hit the post on a prior shot. A few minutes after, Melie received a pass from John McLachlan and fired another shot past the goalie, giving Melie his third goal of the contest and a 3-1 advantage to EC. The Pioneers responded with a goal right before the buzzer sounded, cutting the deficit to 3-2 after one period of play. Alfred State outshot the Soaring Eagles 7-6 in the opening period. The Pioneers started the scoring in the second period, picking up a goal three minutes in to even up the match at three. 20 seconds later, McLachlan answered right back for Elmira, getting a shot past the keeper to give EC the advantage right back. Alfred State evened up the contest again, getting the tying goal 80 seconds after Elmira had pulled in front. The Pioneers tallied three goals over the next seven minutes, taking a 7-4 advantage as the first half winded down. Just seconds before the first half concluded, Melie found his way into the assist column, finding Troy Cammer who beat the goalie to make the score 7-5 at halftime. EC led in shots on goal in the second period 7-5. 
 
 
Three minutes into the third quarter, Melie took advantage of an extra man opportunity, receiving a pass from McLachlan and finding the back of the net for his fourth goal of the match. 15 seconds later, EC was a man up again, and a shot by Makai Tarjamo beat the goalie to even up the contest at seven goals each. The Pioneers answered back, breaking the tie a minute later. Austin Jerzak responded by scoring twice for EC in a minute span to put the Soaring Eagles back in front 9-8. The first was assisted by Melie again and the second was an unassisted goal. McLachlan was able to beat the goalie again a few minutes later, taking a pass from Melie and giving EC a 10-8 advantage. Alfred State scored a goal on the final minute of the third, Elmira taking a 10-9 advantage into the final period of play. The Soaring Eagles led 8-3 in shots on net in the third period. Alfred State responded with two goals over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to retake the advantage. Jerzak followed up with his third goal of the match to tie up the score, this one assisted by McLachlan. The Pioneers broke the tie, but McLachlan got it back right away for EC, evening up the score at 12. The Pioneers answered back, breaking the tie again with four minutes remaining. The Pioneers closed out the contest, the Soaring Eagles falling late in this one, 13-12.


LEADERS
Offensively, Melie led the way, tallying four goals and recording three assists. McLachlan notched a pair of goals and added three assists to his total. Jerzak recorded a hat trick while Tarjamo notched a pair of goals.

The Soaring Eagles return to action for the regular season finale on Saturday April 25th when they travel to Langhorne PA. for a matchup with the Highlanders of Cairn University. Draw control is set for 6:30 PM.
