ELMIRA, N.Y. – Dave Tomkalski, Head Athletic Trainer, has announced his retirement after over three decades of service to the Elmira College athletic department.
Tomkalski arrived at Elmira in 1993 and has coordinated sports medicine services for the Soaring Eagles throughout his tenure. Over his 32 years, Tomkalski began teaching courses in sports medicine and became an instructor in Physical Education.
Dave is one of the founders and the first president of the District of Columbia Athletic Trainers Association. He is an active member of the Elmira community, presenting at numerous clinics and symposiums, including lecturing volunteers of the Special Olympics on how to recognize and treat injuries.
He earned a bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Athletic Training from the University of Toledo and a master's degree in Sports Medicine from Western Michigan University. He is certified by the NATA (National Athletic Trainers Association) and the state of New York, as well as being a certified instructor for the American Red Cross in First Aid and CPR.
"Dave's years of service and commitment to the Elmira College athletic programs has had a direct and positive influence on all current and former students and staff," Head Men's Ice Hockey Coach Aaron Saul adds. "Dave's professionalism, quick witted humor and endearing laugh will always be remembered by everyone in the Elmira College community. What will be missed the most is the fact Dave was always there to listen to our athletes. The countless hours of stim/ice and taping, Dave always provides a positive and safe environment where athletes could talk about their success, failures and frustrations. Dave will certainly be missed, and we wish him the best in his retirement!"
"Dave's dedication, wisdom, and unwavering commitment as an athletic trainer have made a lasting impact on the sports medicine team within the Empire 8, as well as those who have had the privilege of working alongside him," Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Internal Operations at Houghton University's Deanna Hand states.
"Throughout his career he has demonstrated leadership and knowledge that will continue to inspire others for years to come. Dave, thank you for your many contributions and the impacts you have made throughout your career.
"Dave has meant so much more to me than just a mentor. Over the years, he became like a father figure to me and played a huge role in shaping not only the athletic trainer I am today, but the person I am as well," Head Athletic Trainer
Maria Market contributes. "As I step into this role, I only hope to be half as good as he was. The impact he has had on this department and on so many student-athletes over the last 30+ years is something that can never truly be replaced."
Dave has made an everlasting impact on Elmira and the surrounding community, and we are forever grateful for his dedication to the Soaring Eagles!
