Elmira Athletics Announces Promotion of Maria Market as Head Athletic Trainer

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Elmira College Director of Athletics, Rhonda Faunce, has announced the promotion of Maria Market to be the next Head Athletic Trainer. Market has worked at Elmira for the past seven years under longtime head trainer Dave Tomkalski and has been a vital part of the entire athletics department. She takes over for Tomkalski after he has announced his retirement.

"I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent the last seven years at a place that truly feels like home," Market states. "Being named Head Athletic trainer is an honor, especially after learning form a mentor [Tomkalski] who dedicated so much of his career to this institution. I love the people, the sense of community, and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our student-athletes every day. I'm excited for this next chapter and grateful for the trust that's been placed in me!"

Market joined EC after working at Arcadia University, an NCAA Division III institution. While with the Knights, she assisted with full training coverage for the men's basketball and baseball programs, helping develop therapeutic treatment plans and exercise programs. Market was also a member of the medical team for the 2018 edition of the world-famous Penn Relays and oversaw the care of the football, water polo, men's soccer, and women's soccer programs at Upper Dublin High School.

"Maria has been an invaluable member of our athletics department for the past seven years, and we are thrilled to see her step into the role of Head Athletic Trainer," adds Faunce. "She has earned the trust and respect of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff through her professionalism, compassion, and unwavering commitment to providing exceptional care. Having worked alongside Dave Tomkalski for many years, she understands the standard of excellence that has defined our sports medicine program, and I have complete confidence in her ability to lead it into the future. This is a well-deserved opportunity, and we are excited for her to continue making a positive impact on the Elmira College community."

Market, a graduate of Temple University, brought a wealth of experience to EC following the completion of the Owls' rigorous program. While at Temple, Market worked with a wide range of student-athletes. She also spent time at Chestnut Hill College, an NCAA Division II institution in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While with the Griffins, Market worked with the men's soccer and women's basketball programs. Market also worked with Drexel University, helping oversee all aspects of training for the Dragons' women's basketball and men's and women's crew teams.
