Oneonta, N.Y. – The Elmira College field hockey team battled throughout Wednesday afternoon's matchup against SUNY Oneonta, seeing the Soaring Eagles falling to the Red Dragons, 9-2.
LEADERS
Peyton DeMaio and
Riley Dutcher each netted a goal apiece, while
Talia Nash and
Madison Fleming each recorded an assist. Fleming, Nash, and Smith each recorded two shots on goal, while Dutcher added two shots on goal.
Elara Rodriguez finished with 13 saves. Elmira totaled 10 shots on goal, 11 shots, and 15 penalty corners.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Oneonta struck three times in the opening quarter to take an early 3-0 lead. Elmira created several opportunities of their own, earning eight penalty corners in the opening 15 minutes.
Aubrey Smith put two shots on goal, while
Gabby Warter added another shot on target.
The Red Dragons added two more goals in the second quarter to take a 5-0 lead into halftime.
Elara Rodriguez kept Elmira in the game with five saves during the second quarter.
Oneonta added two goals early in the third quarter before Elmira responded with a pair of goals. DeMaio put the Soaring Eagles on the board at 35:55, finishing a feed from Nash. Elmira continued to apply pressure, with Nash and Fleming each putting shots on goal before Dutcher found the back of the cage at 39:18 off an assist from Fleming.
Oneonta answered with two more goals later in the quarter, taking a 9-2 lead into the final 15 minutes. Elmira continued to generate opportunities in the fourth quarter, earning three additional penalty corners, but was ultimately not enough as they fell short (9-2).
