Field Hockey Keeps Pace with Golden Eagles, Comes Up Short Late in the Fourth Quarter

Elmira, N.Y. – The Elmira College field hockey team hosted Empire 8 opponent SUNY Brockport at Campus Field on Wednesday evening. The Soaring Eagles battled back from an early deficit and put together a strong first half before falling to Brockport, 7-2.

LEADERS
Offensively, Madison Fleming led with one goal and two shots on goal, while Haley Henderson added a goal of her own. Riley Dutcher recorded an assist while Aubrey Smith added one shot on goal. Elara Rodriguez finished with nine saves in the cage. Elmira earned 12 penalty corners, including nine in the first half, and finished with five shots on goal.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
Brockport struck three times in the opening seven minutes to take an early 3-0 lead, but the Soaring Eagles responded with a strong push of their own. Elmira earned a pair of penalty corners at 7:47 and 7:48 before Fleming put the Soaring Eagles on the board at 10:45, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Elmira continued to apply pressure through the remainder of the opening quarter, earning two more penalty corners in the final minute (3-1).

The Soaring Eagles carried their momentum into the second quarter. Smith put a shot on goal early in the period, and Elmira earned back-to-back penalty corners before Henderson finished off a feed from Dutcher at 18:17 to bring the Soaring Eagles within one.

Elmira continued to create opportunities throughout the second quarter, earning three additional penalty corners and putting another shot on goal. Rodriguez also made a save during the period to keep Brockport off the board. After a strong response, EC entered halftime trailing just 3-2.

Brockport regained momentum in the third quarter, scoring once at 44:36 to extend their lead to 4-2. Rodriguez kept Elmira within striking distance with four saves during the period, while the Soaring Eagles continued to create opportunities of their own (4-2).

Brockport added three goals in the fourth quarter to pull away. Rodriguez continued to battle in the cage, recording four saves in the final 15 minutes. Ultimately, EC fell short 7-2.

The Soaring Eagles continue E8 play as they travel to Utica University on Saturday, September 26. Game times is slated for 2:00 PM.
