Nick Cottone '19 | Baseball
It was a breakthrough 2019 season for Nick Cottone '19, who emerged as one of the top pitchers in the Empire 8 Conference as a senior. The Toms River, New Jersey, native produced career figures in every statistical category, going 3-3 with a 3.96 ERA and a program single-season record 70 strikeouts in 61.1 innings of work. In his second start of the year against No. 20-ranked Johns Hopkins, the 6-foot-5-inch right-handed hurler established another team record with 11 strikeouts. Recognized by the E8 as a Second Team All-Conference honoree, Cottone ranked second in the conference in strikeouts and will graduate second all-time with 131 Ks.

Cydney Gamido '21 | Cheerleading
A second-year flyer for the Elmira College cheerleading team, Cydney Gamido '21 was chosen as the team's 2019 Booster Club Cheerleader of the Year. The sophomore from Bloomingdale, New Jersey, helped the Soaring Eagles earn first-place finishes in each of their competitions leading up to NCA College Nationals, which included a win at the Upstate Collegiate Championship at the Murray Athletic Center on March 10. In Daytona Beach, Florida, Gamido and the Soaring Eagles recorded a two-way combined score of 94.8708 to clinch fourth place and a sixth consecutive top-5 finish at NCA College Nationals.

Tina O'Donnell '20 | Field Hockey
On a team with the minimum number of field players, goalkeeper Tina O'Donnell '20 was a major key to the success of the EC field hockey team in the fall of 2018. With O'Donnell's guidance, the Soaring Eagles won six games, the most since 2005 and tied for fourth-most in program history. The Kutztown, Pennsylvania, product, finished her junior year first in the Empire 8 Conference and fifth in the nation with 12.94 saves per game, as she totaled 220 stops in her first season as a full-time starter. O'Donnell is just the third goalie in program history to surpass 200 saves in a season and was chosen as Elmira's representative on the Empire 8 Sportswoman of the Year Team.

Justin Porrett '19 | Men's Basketball
For the second year in a row, Justin Porrett '19 was honored by the Elmira College men's basketball program as the Booster Club Player of the Year. As a junior, Porrett led all three divisions of NCAA basketball in assists per game, and he nearly did so again as a senior. In addition to team-highs in points (15.6) and rebounds (5.4) per game, Porrett dished out 7.2 assists per contest, second-most in Division III. The fourth-year point guard from Dumont, New Jersey, was also first among all active players in D-III in career dimes throughout the season. Porrett, an Empire 8 All-Conference Second Teamer, not only became the 17th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points, but he finished his four years with a program-record 598 career assists.

Owen Rose '22 | Men's Cross Country
First-year distance runner Owen Rose '22 collected EC Booster Club Runner of the Year accolades for the men's cross country team after leading the Soaring Eagles to the finish line in all eight races. The rookie had five top-15 finishes, while breaking program records at the 5,000- and 6,000-meter distances. At the 8,000-meter Cross Country Only Conference (CCOC) Championships, Rose finished a season-best eighth with a PR time of 28:27.80, the third-fastest 8K time logged by a Soaring Eagle since men's cross country was re-introduced at Elmira in 2015.

Matt McGaugh '21 | Men's Golf
Sophomore linksman Matt McGaugh '21 built off of a successful debut campaign to lead the Soaring Eagles on the course in 2018-19. McGaugh shaved nearly six strokes off of his average score from a year ago at 80.83. He carded five rounds below 80, including a 5-over-par 77 the Keuka College Invitational and a 4-over-par 75 on the first 18 holes at the two-day Oswego State Fall Invitational. The second-year standout placed inside the top 10 at both tournaments, as he tied for fourth at Keuka and placed sixth at Oswego. At the Empire 8 Conference Championships, the Hamilton, New York, native tied for 17th across four rounds of action, the highest-placing for an Elmira golfer in an E8 Championship since Troy Gordon '15 tied for 13th in 2014-15.

Connor Powell '20 | Men's Ice Hockey
The United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) snubbed Connor Powell '20 from its All-Conference Team in each of the past two seasons, but not in 2018-19. The third-year forward was crowned the UCHC's Co-Player of the Year and an All-UCHC First Team honoree. The pride of Merrimack, New Hampshire, was also named to the CCM/AHCA All-America Second Team after tallying a team-leading 23 goals as a junior. Powell, who surpassed 100 career points as a junior, finished in a tie for third in Division III in goals per game (0.85), sixth in game-winning goals (5), and 10th in power-play goals (7). His prolific scoring efforts helped the Soaring Eagles go 12-4-2 against conference opponents and earn the second seed in the UCHC Championships.

Sam Shaw '22 | Men's Lacrosse
Originally from Portland, Maine, freshman Sam Shaw '22 injected a much-needed breath of life into the Soaring Eagle offense in 2019. The rookie attackman compiled team highs in points (25) and goals (24) despite missing one contest. He found the back of the net in 11 of the 14 games in which he played, highlighted by a six-goal performance in a 9-8 win over Wells College and a hat trick in a 6-5 victory over Keystone. Shaw is the first EC freshman to score over 20 goals in a season since 2014 and is the first Soaring Eagle with at least 25 points since 2016.

Colin Morrison '19 | Men's Soccer
Senior captain Colin Morrison '19 repeated as the men's soccer team's Booster Club Player of the Year after winning the award as a junior. Morrison, a product of  Carlsbad, California, has been a consistent, vocal, and physical center back during his tenure as a Soaring Eagle. He was honored for the third time in his career by the Empire 8 Conference in 2018, as the veteran defender was named an E8 All-Conference Honorable Mention. In his final season, Morrison logged a team-leading 1,287 minutes while starting in 14 of 15 contests.

Stephen Gervase '20 | Men's Tennis
As a junior - one of only two upperclassmen on the Elmira men's tennis team - Stephen Gervase '20 was promoted to the No. 1 spot in the singles and doubles lineups. While playing against the toughest competition, Gervase posted six total wins. Two of his singles victories and all three doubles triumphs were earned against Empire 8 Conference competition. As a result, the E8 tabbed Gervase as its Men's Tennis Player of the Week on three occasions. In the first two matches of the E8 schedule, the Lebanon, Connecticut, native swept singles and doubles action against the The Sage Colleges and Utica College, helping the Soaring Eagles start league play with back-to-back wins over the Gators and Pioneers.

Ryan McDonough '19 | Men's Volleyball
Ryan McDonough '19 is the most recent in a line of successful outside hitters to graduate from the EC men's volleyball program. As a senior, McDonough was first in the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) and ninth nationally with a career-high 403 kills, making him just the third Soaring Eagle to reach 400-plus kills in a season. At the season's end, the Lindenhurst, New York, native was elected a UVC All-Conference Honorable Mention for a second consecutive year. Across his four seasons sporting the Purple and Gold, the fourth-year hitter amassed 1,197 kills, trailing only Erik Griffin '16 (1,539), a two-time All-American, and Ryan Gelenitis '14 (1,440) for third-place all-time. He also ranks among program leaders in career aces (175), blocks (141), and digs (616).

Maddy Johnson '19 | Softball
Another repeat Elmira College Booster Club Player of the Year is softball's standout center fielder, Maddy Johnson '19. An E8 All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2019, Johnson has been a mainstay in the lineup for the Soaring Eagles since her freshman campaign. She once again led the team at the plate, recording a team-high .342 batting average with 26 hits. The Rome, Pennsylvania, native also scored 14 runs, stole nine bases, and displayed superb defensive ability with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Johnson's four-year total for hits is 121, third-most in program history, and her career batting average (.406) ranks first all-time.

Gabe Carmona '19 | Sports Medicine
A three-year letterwinner with the Elmira College women's soccer team, Gabe Carmona '19 has been a member of the sports medicine student assistant staff since the fall of 2017. On the pitch, Carmona posted team-bests with 96 saves and a .774 save percentage as a senior. On the sideline, she's assisted the sports med staff with coverage at cheerleading, women's soccer, women's ice hockey and softball games and practices. According to Head Athletic Trainer Dave Tomkalski, Carmona is a quick learner, a joy to have around, and is very skilled in practice preparation.

Lindsey Heaton '19 | Women's Basketball
The 2015-16 Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Year, Lindsey Heaton '19, wrapped up her collegiate career with the Soaring Eagles by taking home E8 All-Conference Honorable Mention accolades. Heaton, a native of New Milford, Connecticut, was the focal point of the Elmira offense this season, as she averaged a team- and career-high 14.4 points per game while playing a conference-high 37.4 minutes per contest. She reached double figures in all but four games, with a single-game career-high 30 points coming in a conference bout against Houghton College on January 22. In the series finale against the Highlanders, Heaton became just the seventh player in team history to surpass the 1,000-point mark.

Claire Preisch '21 | Women's Cross Country
In two seasons as a runner for the Soaring Eagle women's cross country team, Claire Preisch '21 has captured both EC Booster Club Runner of the Year awards. Preisch, who paced the team to the finish line in every race as a freshman, did so in six of Elmira's eight races in the fall of 2018. The Milton, Pennsylvania, product recorded a pair of top-10 finishes, as she placed sixth at SUNY Poly's Wildcat Classic 6,000-meter race and fourth at SUNY Delhi's 5,000-meter Bronco Classic. Her sixth-place showing at the Wildcat Classic not only guided the women's cross country team to its first-ever team win, but ranks as the 10th-fastest 6K in program history (26:56.40).

Maddy Jerolman '19 | Women's Ice Hockey
One of three Soaring Eagles to reach the 100-point club during the 2018-19 season, Maddy Jerolman '19 proved to be one of the best scorers in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC). An All-UCHC First-Team selection, Jerolman recorded career highs with 17 goals and 22 assists as a senior. She was 10th in the nation in points per game (1.39) and 12th in assists per game (0.79), while sitting third among all players in the UCHC with 39 points. On Class of 2019 Recognition Day, Jerolman helped the nationally-ranked Soaring Eagles clinch the UCHC regular-season title on the same night she notched her 100th point. The Hamden, Connecticut, native ended her career riding a 13-game point streak, with two points in the UCHC title game against William Smith and the NCAA Quarterfinal versus Adrian.

Mikayla Carfello '22 | Women's Lacrosse
Mikayla Carfello '22 looked more like a veteran than a freshman on the turf in 2019, as the first-year attacker scored a team-leading 26 points and 24 goals for the EC women's lacrosse team. The rookie from Pequannock Township, New Jersey, netted at least one goal in eight of her first 10 collegiate appearances. During that span, she helped the Soaring Eagles earn their first Empire 8 Conference win in an 18-9 drubbing of The Sage Colleges with a five-goal outburst. In the second half of the season, Carfello logged a seven-point (6g-1a) outing in a win over Alfred University, before closing the year with four goals against Houghton College.

Allie LoPresti '19 | Women's Soccer
A senior, team captain, and leader from the midfield, Allie LoPresti '19 evolved from a role player in her first season with the Elmira College women's soccer team to a key piece for the Soaring Eagles. In the fall of 2018, LoPresti was one of only three players to start all 17 games. She nearly tripled her minutes on the field from her junior campaign with 1,251 as a senior, including all 110 minutes of action in a season-opening double-overtime draw against Alfred State College. For her career, the Norwich, New York, native played in 42 games with 23 starts and logged over 1,800 minutes.

Katy Jewett '21 | Women's Tennis
Originally from Upper Nyack, New York, Katy Jewett '21 displayed tremendous perseverance on the court in her second season with the Soaring Eagle women's tennis program. Jewett returned from offseason surgery to win a team-high 10 matches in the fall. The second-year netter was utilized in nearly every position as a singles player, as she continued to ascend the lineup as the fall campaign progressed. Jewett went 7-3 in singles action with an impressive 5-2 showing against Empire 8 Conference opponents. She opened the conference slate with five consecutive victories, a streak that ended with her first win at No. 3 singles against Utica College.

Taylor Kaznowski '19 | Women's Volleyball
The second all-time leader in assists in the storied history of the EC women's volleyball program, Taylor Kaznowski '19, was named the Booster Club Player of the Year for the second time, after first winning the award in 2016-17. Kaznowski pulled the strings for the Elmira offense again in the fall, as the senior setter added 949 more assists to her career total. The Hamburg, New York, native is one of only five Soaring Eagles to eclipse 3,000 career assists and is second only to Sarah Deuel ’01 (3,725) with a four-year total of 3,435 helpers. Kaznowski also achieved 16 double-doubles in 2018, as she surpassed 1,000 career digs in her final season.
