Pine Valley, NY -- The Elmira College Women's Ice Hockey team took on ECAC West competitor SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. The Soaring Eagles looked to improve on a 3-2-1 overall record while the Red Dragons would be searching for their first victory of the 2010-11 season.
Elmira would control the first period as they would out-shoot Cortland 12-to-3. Neither team would convert on any of their chances as the period would come to close at 0-0. The second period would be a different story as the Elmira offense would explode for 6 goals.
Captain
Alex McPhail '12 (Oakville, ONT -- Toronto Aeros, PWHL) would get things started for Elmira as she netted her first goal of the 2010-11 season at the 2:40 mark.
Tori Charron '14 (Goodwood, ONT -- Aurora Panthers, PWHL) would register an assist on the opening goal. EC would look to build on their 1-0 lead as they would tally four goals in a six minute span. Scoring Elmira's second goal of the contest and first of the season was
Amber Tirri '13 (Ringwood, NJ -- Wyoming Seminary, NAPHA). Tirri's goal would come at the 8:32 mark in the period.
Samantha Curk '13 (Dorchester, ONT -- Niagara University) and
Ella Stewart '14 (Mississauga, ONT -- Notre Dame Hounds Midgets) earned assists on the goal. Less than three minutes later
Alex Bresler '12 (Golden, CO -- Colorado Select, JWHL) would score EC's third goal on a string of passes from
Kelsey Evershed '14 (Franktown, ONT -- Winchendon School) and Stewart.
Thirty-two seconds later
Madison Johnston '13 (Toronto, ONT -- Toronto Aeros, PWHL) would score her first goal of the season giving Elmira a 4-0 advantage. Curk and
Lauren Campbell '12 (Erie, PA -- Chatham University) picked up assists on the goal. At the 14:53 mark, Bresler would weave her way in and out of Cortland defenders to notch her second goal of the contest.
Tanis Lamoureux '14 (Canton, MI -- Victory Honda, TOEHL) and
Mary-Kate Gellerman '13 (Frederick, MD -- Washington Pride, JWHL) would register assists on the goal. With 10 seconds remaining in the period,
Katy Walker '12 (Edmonds, WA -- Colorado Select, JWHL) would score her third goal of the season and first since the season opener. McPhail would tally an assist on the goal. Elmira would out-shoot the Red Dragons in the second 20-to-4 and head into the third period with a commanding 6-0 lead.
The third period would be all Elmira as they would score goals at the 4:24 and 5:23 marks. Tirri would pick up her second goal of the season as Evershed and
Maddy Charbonneau '14 (Greeley, CO -- Colorado Select, JWHL) tallied assists. Charron would score Elmira's eighth and final goal of the contest as she would snipe the top-shelf for her team leading eighth goal.
EC would cruise to an 8-0 victory as they were led by second year goalie
Lauren Sullivan '13 (Toronto, ONT -- Markham-Stouffville Stars, PWHL). She made 17 saves in the contest, posting her second shutout of the 2010-11 season. Elmira will look make it a weekend sweep of Cortland as they host the Red Dragons at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday the 20th at the Murray Athletics Center in Pine Valley, NY.
