Women’s Volleyball Falls to Nationally-Ranked Cortland in Four Sets

Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team fought valiantly but fell to 17th ranked Cortland 3-1 (14-25, 24-26, 25-20, 14-25) Tuesday evening in Elmira. The loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 17-3, while the win improves the Red Dragons to 26-1.

EC got off to a slow start in the first set but battled back to carry some momentum into the second set, despite falling 25-14 in the first.

The Purple and Gold held a steady six point lead for the first half of the second set and was up 16-10 after several Sasha Zavadska '13 (Bratislava, SVK – The British School) kills, solid blocking play at net and stingy defense to set up scoring opportunities. However, the Red Dragons made a 12-6 run of their own to tie it at 22 all.  Zavadska put the Soaring Eagles back in front with back-to-back kills to make it 24-22. Cortland responded with four straight points to take the second set 26-24 lead.

Elmira got off to a good start once again in the third set as they took a 20-13 and carried that to a 25-20 victory to come within two games to one. EC held a 5-4 advantage in the fourth set, but quickly got doubled up as they were behind 12-6. The Purple and Gold fought back to get within four at one point. The Red Dragons proved to be too much down the stretch as they spread their lead and prevailed 25-14.

The Soaring Eagles return to action this weekend at the Clarkson Tournament when they take on the host Friday at 5:00 p.m.
