Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Men's Soccer team reached the 10 win plateau as they beat Keuka College 2-0 Monday afternoon in Elmira. The win improves the Soaring eagles to 10-2-1 overall, while the loss drops the Storm to 7-4-1.
Elmira honored five members of the Class of 2012 in their final home game as members of the Men's Soccer team. Edward Michelson '12 (Winsted, CT -- Cheshire), Jason Guernsey '12 (Cherry Valley, NY -- Cherry Valley), Jared Micheller '12 (Avon, CT -- The Winchendon School), Alston Eldridge '12 (Sharon, CT -- Kent School) and Ryan Campbell '12 (Houghton, NY -- Fillmore Central) were recognized prior to the contest.
When it came time for the game Elmira was ready as it struck first in the 20th minute and a member of the Class of 2012 was on the scoring end of the goal. Ernesto Valverde '14 (East Hampton, NY -- East Hampton) made a nifty in-and-out move to beat a Storm defender. Keuka committed a foul, leading to an Eldridge penalty kick which he drove low into the left side of the net. EC took a 1-0 advantage into the break.
In the second half the Purple and Gold continued its solid ball control, as it led to numerous scoring opportunities. The Soaring Eagles outshot their opponents 25-6 overall in the game. In the 52nd minute EC added an insurance goal off a free kick. This time the Class of 2012 was on the assisting end as Michelson placed the ball perfectly where Jackson Correia '14 (West Simsbury, CT -- Masters School) redirected it with his head into the back of the net.
The defense was stout as it didn't give up a single shot on net, helping Micheller earn a shutout in his final home game. Derek Condon stopped nine shots for the Storm. Elmira returns to action Wednesday when it travels to take on SUNY Institute of Technology at 6:00 p.m.
