Women’s Volleyball Starts Well at Empire 8 Championships

Rochester, NY – The EC Women's Volleyball team showed determination and pride Friday evening beating Hartwick College in the Empire 8 Championships 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 25-20). The win puts the Soaring Eagles at 20-5 and 5-0 in E8 competition, while the Hawks drop to 12-17 and 2-3 in E8 competition.

EC started off strong combining for 17 kills and only two errors in the first set. Leading the way were Brittany Raykoske '12 (Johnstown, NY -- Gloversville) and Sasha Zavadska '13 (Bratislava, SVK -- The British School) who combined for 47 points. The Soaring Eagles continued to dominate throughout the match, but lost a tough third set by two points. However, the Purple and Gold re-cooperated in the fourth set to stay undefeated in conference play. Raykoske led the way with 24 kills, one assist, four digs and two blocks. Zavadska was close behind finishing with 21 kills, three assists and 15 digs.   

Other contributors to the team were Molly Short '13 (Sterling, CO -- Sterling) with 42 assists, three kills, and 16 digs. Abbie Martin '14 (Broadalbin, NY -- Broadalbin-Perth) added five kills, two digs and one block. Taryn Rumsey '14 (Mansfield, PA -- Mansfield) supplied eight kills, four aces, five assists, 12 digs and one block. Francene Cicia '13 (Sunderland, MA -- Frontier Regional) provided two aces and six digs while Catherine Miller '14 (Pittsburg, PA -- Penn Hills) 13 digs for the Soaring Eagles.

The Soaring Eagles return to action Saturday against the Stevens Ducks and Utica Pioneers at the Empire 8 Conference Championships.
