Rochester, NY – The EC Women's Volleyball team took to the court Saturday looking to remain undefeated in conference play until the end of the season. However, in the second game the Soaring Eagles could not defend the Stevens Ducks from earning the win. After the loss EC was able to re-cooperate and take down the Pioneers of Utica easily. The Soaring Eagles are now 6-1 in conference play and tied for first place in the conference standings.
In the second game against the Ducks, EC started off very strong in the first set dominating the court in every way 25-12. Stevens would fight back in the second and third set holding off the purple and gold to win it 25-23 and 25-17. In spite of the sudden momentum shift the Soaring Eagles would not give up as they would dominate the fourth set 25-15. Coming down to the last set to decide the match, the Ducks would fight a little harder and just beat out EC for the fifth set win 15-11.
Brittany Raykoske '12 (Johnstown, NY -- Gloversville) and Sasha Zavadska '13 (Bratislava, SVK -- The British School) combined for 33 points and 30 kills despite the loss. Molly Short '13 (Sterling, CO -- Sterling) and Taryn Rumsey '14 (Mansfield, PA -- Mansfield) were also major contributors to this game combining for 19 points, 13 kills, 42 assists, four aces, 23 digs and 3 blocks. Francene Cicia '13 (Sunderland, MA -- Frontier Regional) also played very well contributing seven aces, four digs and two assists.
In EC's third game, against the Pioneers, they looked to take out all their frustration and put the loss behind them. Zavadska stood out in this one contributing nine kills with zero attack errors, three assists, seven aces and five digs. Raykoske and Rumsey also played very well combining for 16 kills, four assists, five aces, eight digs and two blocks. Other players that contributed to the team were Short, Abbie Martin '14 (Broadalbin, NY -- Broadalbin-Perth), Amanda Matson '13 (Corning, NY -- Corning West) and Jessica Hull '15 (Ypsilanti, MI – Milan).
The Soaring Eagles return to action Friday, October 28 at the Hunter College Tournament against nationally ranked SUNY Cortland and Hunter College.
