Women’s Tennis Plays Hard at Hoboken

Hoboken, NJ – The Elmira College Women's Tennis team took on the always tough Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology today. Elmira showed tremendous improvements from the beginning of the season; however, the Ducks showed better talents on the courts.

Amy Schmidt '15 (Batavia, NY -- Batavia) and Melanie Walker '13 (Scranton, PA -- Scranton) showed the most sign of improvement today winning the first game of their doubles match. In singles, Schmidt proved to herself and her teammates what her capabilities could be as long as she kept her mind in it. Playing at the second singles, Schmidt showed her true abilities playing a tight first set 6-3 before losing the match 6-0 in the second set. Elyse Colby '12 (Owego, NY -- Coronado) and Kayla Fitzgerald '15 (Thomaston, CT -- Thomaston) also showed major improvements this season taking their opponents to deuce almost every service game. Stepping in at sixth singles for the Purple and Gold was Amanda Hart-Hempstead '13 (Topsham, ME -- Arart) who has shown the most improvement this season with the ability to hit a better forward and be more consistent. Hart-Hempstead stepped in at the sixth singles today and lost a tough match 6-2, 6-0. Alex Putney '12 (Dundee, NY -- Hammondsport) proved her toughness once again battling at the fourth singles position.

The EC Women's Tennis team will now look to do their best at the end of the year New York State Tournament in Rochester, NY next Friday, October 14th.
