Women’s Basketball Falls in First Game of New Season

Cortland, NY – The Elmira College Women's Basketball Team dropped a tough game on the road, 79-49, to the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland. The Soaring Eagles struggled from the field as they were held to 15-of-52 shooting while the Red Jackets shot just over 50 percent. However, the Purple and Gold showed some life behind the three point line shooting 43 percent in the second half.

Elmira started off well taking an early lead and going toe to toe with a tough Cortland team the first 10 minutes of the game. However, the Cortland team would soon get a 15 point lead due to turnovers and missed jump shots. The Soaring Eagles would continue to fight, though the Cortland would lead by 22 at the half.

The second half would be all Cortland as it would continue to force more turnovers and missed shots. However, the Soaring Eagles showed signs of improvement with Jessica Zoltowski '14 (Erie, PA -- Harbor Creek) and Darcy James '12 (Castile, NY -- Letchworth Central) leading the team in scoring. Zoltowski led the team scoring 21 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. James recorded 17 points, four rebounds, one assist and two steals. Another major contributor to the team was first year player Kelsey Geisler '15 (Staten Island, NY -- St. Peter's) shooting 3-of-4 from the three point line. Geisler also recorded three rebounds, two assists and one steal in her first game as a Soaring Eagle.

The Purple and Gold will look to recuperate from the loss at the Carnegie Mellon Tournament November 18 & November 19.
