Men’s Hockey Loses a Nail Biter

Brockport, NY – The EC Men's Ice Hockey team lost a tough game Friday evening falling in overtime 3-4 to the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 4-6-2 overall, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 7-4-0.

The Soaring Eagles came out reading to play in the first period scoring within the first two minutes of the game with Brendan Sanders (Mississauga, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers) and getting assisted by Rick Acorn '12 (Barrie, ONT -- Couchiching Terriers). This score would stand until around the ninth minute of the second period when the Golden Eagles would score the power play goal to tie the game at 1-1. Scoring the goal for Brockport was Mike Hayward and assisting on the goal was Troy Polino.

The game would stay tied at 1-1 until the third period where the scoring elevated. At the 1:10 minute mark defenseman Brock Sawyer '12 (Toronto, ONT -- Powell River Kings) would score an unassisted power play goal to put the Soaring Eagles up 2-1. Less than 42 seconds later the Golden Eagles would tie it up 2-2 with Ian Finnerty scoring an unassisted short-handed goal. The game would remain tied for a while in the third period with both teams looking to gain an edge to win the game. The Soaring Eagles would score again at the 13:38 mark when Kevin Willer '12 (Toronto Ontario -- North York Rangers) would score a power play goal to put EC up 3-2. Jesper Strale '14 (Uppsala, Sweden -- Springfield Pic's) and Tyler Campbell '13 (Mississauga, ONT -- Mississauga Chargers) would assist Willer on the play. The Purple and Gold would look to finish the game off with a win, but after a Brockport timeout with 36 seconds left the Golden Eagles would tie the game at 3-3 and force overtime.

In overtime, the Golden Eagles took the momentum from before and used it to finish off the game 58 seconds into the period. Finnerty scored the game winning goal for Brockport and was assisted by Hayward and Steve Sachman. Darren MacDonald '13 (Stittsville, ONT -- Nepean Raiders) made 26 stops in net for Elmira, while Aaron Green made 30 stops for Brockport. The Purple and Gold return to action tomorrow when they take on SUNY Geneseo at home in the Murray Athletics Center.
