Jamaica, NY – EC Men's Volleyball played two games this afternoon on the final day of the York Men's Volleyball Classic. Elmira was looking to pick up wins as they took on New Jersey City University and New York City Tech.
Against New Jersey City University the Soaring Eagles would claim a 3-1 victory. Elmira dropped the first set of today's match in close fashion by the score of 25-23. Elmira would rally in a big way by taking the next three sets: 25-19, 25-19, 25-22. Eric Sandmann '14 (Glenville, NY -- Burnt Hills) and Zach Pugh '11 (West Winfield, NY -- Mount Markham) combined for 31 kills to lead the Elmira offense. Rookie Michael Vellutato '14 (Topanga, CA -- Redondo Union) registered a weekend high 45 assists to set up the Elmira attack.
In game two Elmira took on New York City Tech. In the contest the Soaring Eagles would roll as they took the first three sets: 25-19, 27-25, 25-18. Ryan Gelenitis '14 (Brick, NJ -- Christian Brothers Academy) would have a big game as he put away 15 kills while classmate Vellutato would assist on 37 Elmira put-a-ways.
During Elmira's 2-0 Sunday, Sandmann would finish with a team high 28 kills while Gelenitis added another 26. Vellutato would end the day with an impressive 82 assists. With the wins Elmira improves to 9-18 on the season and will look to continue today's success on Tuesday, March 15th as EC travels to Buffalo, NY to take on D'Youville College. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
