D’Youville Tops Elmira in Men’s Volleyball, 3-1

Buffalo, NY The Men's Volleyball team dropped a close match to the Spartans of D'Youville College tonight by the score of 3-1.  In the match Elmira looked to avenge a loss early in the season to D'Youville but was unable as the Spartans proved to be too much tonight.

                                         

D'Youville would claim the first set with relative ease, taking it 25-18.  Elmira would make a strong push in the second but come up just short, falling down 2-sets-to-0 as the Spartans claimed a 25-22 victory.  In the second set Elmira made 12 kills on 40 attempts for a hitting percentage of .100. 

 

The Soaring Eagles would come to within one set of the Spartans as EC claimed a 25-21 set victory in the third.  Unfortunately for Elmira D'Youville would settle in to take the fourth set 25-18, handing EC their 19th loss of the season. 

 

In the contest Elmira's Ryan Gelenitis '14 (Brick, NJ -- Christian Brothers Academy) led the team with 16 kills and chipped in on the defensive side with 8 digs.  Classmate Eric Sandmann '14 (Glenville, NY -- Burnt Hills) put away another 11 kills while making 6 digs and a solo block.  Michael Vellutato '14 (Topanga, CA -- Redondo Union) set up the Elmira attack by making 36 assists and aided on the defensive side with 9 digs.

 

Elmira Men's Volleyball will be back in action this weekend as they travel to participate in the SUNY IT Tri-match.  EC's first is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. against SUNY IT on Saturday, March 19th.
