Soaring Eagles Give the Red Dragons a Good Fight

Pine Valley, NY – The Elmira College Women's Tennis team lost another hard match today against the Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta, 9-0. Despite losing the match, the Soaring Eagles showed fight and potential for their soon conference match against Alfred. 

 

At number 1 doubles, Alex Putney '12 (Dundee, NY -- Hammondsport) and Bri Palmiero '12 (Rochester, NY -- Bishop Kearney) gave their opponents a good test as they pushed them to 8-4 in favor of the Red Dragons. Putney and Palmiero started off strong holding their serve and coming close to breaking their opponents serve, but it would not last before the Red Dragons just stepped up their game to finish the doubles match. At 2 doubles, Amy Schmidt '15 (Batavia, NY -- Batavia) and Melanie Walker '13 (Scranton, PA -- Scranton) gave their opponents a good test in the beginning breaking serve right away and showing good fight. However, it wouldn't last for the doubles team as they fell 8-3. 

 

In singles play there were a several competitive matches.  At sixth singles, Micah Moskoff '14 (Somerset, MA -- Somerset) showed real heart and motivation before losing 7-5, 6-2. First year players Amy Schmidt '15 (Batavia, NY -- Batavia) and Kayla Fitzgerald '15 (Thomaston, CT – Thomaston) had good battles with the Dragons, but neither could fight off their hard hitting tactics or strategic moves around the court.  Schmidt and Fitzgerald both showed good movement and stamina as they battled before losing with identical scores of 6-1, 6-0. Putney also showed good movement and offense at the number 4 singles before losing 6-3, 6-1.   

 

EC Women's Tennis returns to action tomorrow as they travel to take on the Alfred University Saxons at 4:00 p.m. in a good conference battle.
