Women’s Tennis Makes Unbelievable Comeback

Alfred, NY – EC Women's Tennis team wins their second conference match yesterday afternoon defeating the Alfred University Saxons. In the beginning Elmira lost all 3 doubles points, but rallied back in singles to win 5 out of 6 singles matches resulting in the 5-4 win.

The Soaring Eagles seemed down and out after doubles losing No. 1 doubles 8-6, No. 2 doubles 8-4, No. 3 doubles 8-6 and No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1. However, the Soaring Eagles would fight back believing that they could win the match.  Starting the rally was fifth singles player Kayla Fitzgerald '15 (Thomaston, CT -- Thomaston) winning her match-up 6-1, 6-2. Next was second singles, Amy Schmidt '15 (Batavia, NY -- Batavia) winning her match-up 6-2, 6-3. Then almost immediately following was fourth singles Alex Putney '12 (Dundee, NY -- Hammondsport) winning 6-3, 6-2. Soon following behind was Melanie Walker '13 (Scranton, PA -- Scranton) at third singles winning 6-2, 6-0.

The match was now tied at 4-4 and it came down to Micah Moskoff '14 (Somerset, MA -- Somerset) at sixth singles. After winning the first set 6-3 then losing the second set 1-6, Moskoff knew that in order for the Soaring Eagles to win she needed to win. With the help of her teammates and coaches she was able to go ahead in the third set 5-2. However, Alfred's Emily Eisenberg would not give up and forcing Moskoff to make mistakes. Soon the score would be 5-5 with darkness right around the corner and light rain starting to come down. The match would eventually move into light and would come down to a third set tiebreaker to decide the match. Moskoff with confidence in herself and teammates cheering her on would pull off the win to give the Soaring Eagles the comeback.

Elmira Women's Tennis, now at 2-2 overall and 2-1 in Empire 8, will look to keep their hopes high facing non-conference opponent Wells College on Saturday, September 17th at 1:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletics Center.
