Women’s Volleyball Downs Alfred in Final Home Contest

Box Score Elmira, NY – The EC Women's Volleyball team displayed much dominance Thursday evening beating fellow conference opponent Alfred University, 3-0, in the final home contest of the 2012 season. The Soaring Eagles improve to 14-10 overall and 7-1 in the Empire 8 conference, while the Saxons fall to 1-20 overall and 0-7 in conference action.

In the first set EC went right to work taking an early lead and putting tremendous pressure on the Saxons. The Soaring Eagles combined for 16 kills and controlled the opening set winning 25-16. In the second set it was a struggle at first, but thanks to some Alfred errors and veteran front line Elmira was able to take the second set 25-10. In the final set the Saxons battled hard trying to keep it close throughout; however, the Soaring Eagles were able to close it out 25-18.

Sasha Zavadska '13, Taryn Rumsey '14 and Amanda Matson '13 all played outstanding combining for 23 kills, 10 aces and 10 digs. Also playing well were Melanie Pershyn '13 and Francene Cicia '13 who combined for two kills, five assists, seven aces and three digs. Catapulting the offense was Molly Short '13 who contributed two kills, 19 assists and four digs.  

The Purple and Gold will return to action Friday, October 19th and Saturday, October 20th when they travel to Willimantic, CT to take part in the Eastern Connecticut State University Tournament. First match will take place on Friday when they play the host at 7:00 p.m.
