Box Score 2 New York, NY –The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team won its first two matches on day one of the New York University Invitational. In the first match EC sailed to victory beating Hunter College 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-15) and dominated late against RIT 3-1 (15-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-17). With the wins the Soaring Eagles improve to 19-11 overall.
Against Hunter, Elmira dominated in the first set to take the early lead. In the second set the Hawks tried to keep it close, but the Soaring Eagles were able to close it out late and eventually carry on to win in the third.
Sasha Zavadska '13, Taryn Rumsey '14 and
Amanda Matson '13 led the EC offense each contributing double digit kills.
Molly Short '13 helped out the offense recording 39 assists and contributed on the defensive side with 10 digs. Also helping out on defense were
Zavadska and
Catherine Miller '13 who provided 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
In the second match, the Tigers of RIT started off strong punishing the Soaring Eagles early. However, the Purple and Gold were able to recuperate late in the second set to tie it up and later build its momentum to win in the third and fourth sets.
Zavadska and
Rumsey continued to direct the offense combining for 29 kills, three aces and two blocks.
Short propelled the offense with double digit assists and recording four kills. Also playing well on both sides for EC were
Matson, Miller and
Francene Cicia '13.
EC will return to action tomorrow on the second day of the NYU Invitational facing Brooklyn College at 9:00 a.m. and the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 1:00 p.m.
