Hoboken, NJ – The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team won three of the final four sets to upend host Stevens Institute of Technology 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-25, 15-10) Friday afternoon in the second Empire 8 Crossover Weekend. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 8-9 overall and 3-1 in Empire 8 competition, while the loss drops the Ducks to 7-14 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Stevens got off to a quick start on its home court winning the first set 25-18 behind 13 kills and just three errors, while hitting .385. EC responded in the second set with a tight 25-22 win as it was extremely accurate finishing with 12 kills to only three errors, good for a .300 hitting percentage. In the third set the Soaring Eagles finished with the most kills of any of the five sets for either team (15) on the way to a 25-19 win. The Ducks responded in set four handling Elmira 25-15. However, the Purple and Gold showed their resiliency once again prevailing in the fifth frame, 15-10, for the crucial conference victory.
Sasha Zavadska '13
led the way with 17 kills and 11 assists.
Amanda Matson '13
had a huge match in the middle for EC finishing with 16 kills and three blocks, while hitting .355.
Taryn Rumsey '14 also finished with a double-double pounding out 13 kills to go along with 10 digs.
Catherine Miller '14 was huge defensively with 13 digs, while
Molly Short '13 proved to be the catalyst with 41 assists.
The Soaring Eagles return to action tomorrow for day two of the Empire 8 Crossover. EC will face Hartwick College at 10:00 a.m. before squaring off with rival Ithaca College at 12:30 p.m.
