Pine Valley, NY – Ayaka Yoshino '16 was the lone winner Saturday as the Elmira College Women's Tennis team fell, 8-1, to visiting Nazareth College at the Murray Athletic Center. The Golden Flyers improve to 6-3 overall and 6-1 in the Empire 8 conference, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in conference action.
The Golden Flyers were able to dominate from the beginning taking all three doubles points. All three EC doubles teams played well, but Nazareth was able to control each doubles match to take an early 3-0 lead.
In singles action, the Soaring Eagles battled back well forcing the Golden Flyers to fight.
Yoshino played a phenomenal match at third singles pulling out the upset in a third set super breaker 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-6).
Amy Schmidt '15, Kayla Fitzgerald '15 and
Stephanie Tock '16 each put up fights in their matches, but were not able to come away with victories.
Schmidt, playing at the first position, competed well before falling 6-2, 6-3.
Fitzgerald contested at the fourth spot before losing 7-5, 6-0 and
Tock hustled at the fifth spot before dropping 6-4, 6-4.
The Purple and Gold will return to action tomorrow when they travel to Scranton, PA to take on non-conference opponent Marywood University starting at 2:00 p.m.
